How to Find Awesome Photographers & Videographers for Your Big Day
Is wedding photography and videography the most important thing when it comes to your wedding? Nope, not at all, however when it comes to planning your special day it should be up there on the priority list of things to look at, budget for and book.
Wedding photography and videography is important because it will capture your day, it will capture your memories, it will tell a story, and not just any story, it will tell a beautiful story of your special day, a day you will never forget. A story that you can show friends and family, your kids, and grandchildren, something you will have and can treasure forever.
Since we opened a few years ago, we have worked with dozens of very talented wedding photographers and videographers, and we have observed a few things that every couple should know when looking for such professionals. Here are some tips you would find extremely helpful:
1. Book your venue first.
It’s a smart idea to hire your photographer and videographer after you’ve secured your venue. Once you’ve booked a venue, it would be easier to find a photographer and videographer as you already have the location (suppliers’ fees would rely on the venue’s location). Aim to book their services immediately after booking a venue since talented photographers and videographers are usually booked one to two years in advance.
Pro tip: If you choose to book your wedding at Olinda Yarra, we’ll be more than glad to recommend photographers and videographers who we have worked with in the past.
2. Hit up your social network for recommendations.
Did you love the wedding photos or video your former colleague posted on Insta? Send them a message asking who the photographer or videographer was and if they would recommend his or her services. Ask your other recently married friends, too, and solicit recommendations from your wedding planner or the manager of your reception site.
Pro tip: You may look for wedding photographers and videographers in your area by exploring Instagram hashtags like #melbourneweddings, #australianbride, #weddingphotographyvictoria #weddingvideographymelbourne.
3. Figure out the style of photography and videography you like.
Do your homework and spend some time online browsing a variety of wedding blogs to get a sense of the style of photography and videography you like. Maybe it’s bright and pop-y, with lots of saturated colour. Or perhaps you prefer a more vintage look, with more washed-out tones and a dreamy, nostalgic feel.
Pro tip: If you’re wanting to achieve a nostalgic, dreamy, and rustic look in your wedding pictures and video, Olinda Yarra has all the things you’re looking for. Our venue is filled with vintage vibes that can make your wedding photos and video pop.
4. Discuss the fee.
Some photographers’ and videographers’ fees include everything including albums, prints, and high-resolution images (saved on a disc or thumb drive); others have a flat or hourly rate, then charge you à la carte for any pictures or albums you want. Many photographers and videographers offer a price list that details several different packages they offer at different price points. Make sure that you understand what’s included. Ask how long the photographer and videographer will spend with you (seven to nine hours is ideal) and whether there will be a second shooter, as you’ll get more detail shots this way.
Pro tip: Enquire about when you can expect to receive everything, from a sneak peek of images (some photographers can give you a handful within a few days) to prints (usually up to three months) to your album (up to a year).
5. Go with your gut.
Once you’ve evaluated the work and fees, and narrowed down the options, it’s time to make your decision. Don’t forget that you’ll be spending the entire wedding day with this person, so you want to make sure you feel completely comfortable with the photographer and videographer.
Pro tip: Before signing any contract, ask yourself: Do you and your fiancé genuinely like this person? Do you feel like the three of you click?
Capturing your special moments is such an important step in planning your wedding day and including in your budget. Ensure you find an awesome photographer and videographer because this is your story which you will relive and can experience for years to come with family and friends.
